With remnants of Hurricane Kenna approaching South Texas, the Woodsboro Eagles traveled
down south to take on the Benavides Eagles. Rain did fall for most of the game,
but it was mostly light drizzle and could have certainly been a lot worse.
First quarter action was predominately quite on both side with no scoring being done.
Woodsboro would take the opening kickoff from the 21 yard line and steadily move
it down field to Benavides's 20 yard line before fumbling it. After an unsuccessful
drive, Benavides would punt the ball to Woodsboro's six yard line where Justin S.
would make a short 4 yard return. However, Justin S. would take the ball on the
3rd play of this drive a distance of 56 yards, reaching Benavides' 19 yard line.
Woodsboro would come as close as their opponents five yard line, but would be unable
to score on 4th down and Benavides would take over on downs.
That would be pretty much the tale of the action for the first quarter.
Most of the second quarter was back and forth, finding neither team able to make
substantial headway. It wouldn't be until halfway through the second quarter that
Woodsboro would strike first with a drive that started on their own 25 yard line
and marched down to Benavides's 21 yard line. From there, Justin K. would hit Justin
S. with a sweet pass for 21 yards and the score. The extra point by Marcus G. would
make the score Woodsboro 7, Benavides 0. It looked as if the Eagles would go into
the half with the lead. But that would not be the case at all. With time running
out, Benavides would take over on a fumble by Justin K. With about 35 seconds till
the half, Benavides would take the ball from their own 11 yard line and in just four
short plays, score, with the aid of a 54 yard pass to Woodsboro's 12 yard line.
Going into the half the score was Woodsboro 7, Benavides 7
Third quarter finds Woodsboro kicking off to Benavides. Benavides takes the ball
on their 21 and are unable to make their first drive a success. They punt on fourth
down, but the punt is a very, very short (5 yards!!) and low punt. Daniel P. picks
up the ball on Benavides's 34 and takes it to their 27 which sets up great field
position for Woodsboro. It would take Woodsboro 10 plays to make it, but with a
short 3 yard run by Justin S., Woodsboro takes the lead, 14-7 with the extra point
by Marcus G. being good. Highlighting the drive was fine running by Daniel P. who
has shown some remarkable improvement in the last two games. From this point on,
the rest of the third quarter, along with most of the fourth would be a defensive
game with neither team able to score....that is, until the final two seconds of the
game.
In the fourth quarter, defense was the name of the game. Each team did a good job
of stopping the other. It wasn't until the final seconds of the game that Woodsboro
would make their final score. Justin K. would intercept a Benavides pass on Woodsboro's
20 yard line and return it 80 yards for the score. The extra point by Marcus G.
would again be good and the final result would be Woodsboro 21, Benavides 7.
Great job gentlemen!
